Another factor is that the increase in the cost of living since 1944 has considerably curtailed the ability of many people to save. People Still Saving a Lot of Money In recent months the rate of savings has risen, following a decline ending in May. This decline was not surprising. Not only had rising prices made it more difficult for people to lay aside money, we had a great deal of loose talk about our "declining dollar." And when people think that the dollar is going to go down in value they are more reluctant to save. As a matter of fact, it is a tribute to the common sense of the public that this talk of currency depreciation had no more extensive effect than occurred.

People are still saving a lot of money $3,100,000,000 in the six months ending April 1 is the national figure for savings of all kind. In the same period, Massachusetts mutual savings bank increased their deposits by $27,000,000 from $3,284,000,000 to $3,311,000,000. Figures for the last three months are not yet available, but it is thought that deposits have continued to increase at about the same rate. Brown Co 3pr. 49 '4 Musk Ring.

Bonds and Real Estate Mortgages Of the $3,311,000,000 which the Massachusetts savings banks hold for their depositors, roughly 85 percent is invested in government bonds and real estate mortgages. The banks hold only about $135,000,000 in railroad bonds, $79,000,000 in bank stocks, $71,000,000 in public utilities, and $67,000,000 in the bonds of telephone companies.

Since October last there has been some switching from government bonds to mortgages, with the result that mortgage holdings have risen from 34 percent of investments to about 37 percent. This is largely due to the fact that for the first time mutual savings banks were this year allowed to invest in FHA mortgage home loans outside Massachusetts. A total of $215,000,000 was so invested over the past year. MFEHAN In Dorchester. July 23.
