Here are details about getting to the Newark Airport from New York City using public transit.

  • Midtown Manhattan: Take an NJ Transit train and the AirTrain.
  • Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, and you don't mind a couple of transfers: Take the PATH, an NJ Transit train, and the AirTrain.
  • Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, and you want to keep it simple: Take the subway to Midtown Manhattan and transfer to an NJ Transit train and the AirTrain.
  • Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, and you want to save on fares: Take the PATH train to Newark Penn Station and transfer to an NJ Transit bus.

Tips

  • NJ Transit train service is not 24/7. Trains run between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m. For 24-hour service, take the PATH train and NJ Transit's #62 bus.

Option 1: Take an NJ Transit train and the AirTrain

Fare: $15.25 for most riders.

This is generally the quickest route from NYC, especially if you're near Midtown Manhattan. NJ Transit estimates travel time from New York Penn to Newark airport at around an hour, but allowing extra time doesn't hurt.

1. Take an NJ Transit train from New York Penn Station to Newark airport.

Some trains on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line lines stop at Newark Liberty International Airport Station. Look for an airplane icon or "EWR" on the departure boards. Not all trains on these lines stop at the airport, so double-check.

Buy a ticket at a vending machine or ticket counter. Keep track of your ticket during your ride because you'll use it again to get on the AirTrain.

When you arrive at Newark International Airport Station, follow signs for the AirTrain.

2. Take the AirTrain from Newark Liberty Airport Station to your airport terminal.

The AirTrain connects with all terminals, plus parking, rental car, and hotel services. It's free to use within the airport.

Allow 15-20 minutes to get to your airport terminal from the train station.

NJ Transit tickets to and from the airport include the fare for the AirTrain. Otherwise it costs $8.

You can buy a ticket onboard the train, but there is a surcharge and you’ll need to pay for the AirTrain separately. Conductors only accept cash.

Option 2: Take the PATH train, an NJ Transit train, and the AirTrain

Fare: $13.75 for most riders.

1. Take the PATH from World Trade Center Station to Newark Penn Station.

World Trade Center Station is in Lower Manhattan. The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, E, R, and W subway lines all have stops nearby.

Fulton Center connects directly to the PATH station. From the lower level of Fulton Center, follow signs for the PATH. You'll exit the subway fare area on your way.

2. Transfer to an NJ Transit train at Newark Penn Station.

Trains that stop at Newark Airport Station are on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line lines. Look for an airplane icon on departure boards or check with an NJ Transit agent if you need help.

Allow yourself extra time at the station to buy NJ Transit tickets. Hang onto your ticket, because you’ll show it again to get on the AirTrain.

3. Transfer to the AirTrain at Newark Airport Rail Station.

The Airtrain serves all airport terminals as well as parking, hotel, and rental car services.

Allow 15-20 minutes to get from the the train station to your terminal.

PATH fares are $2.75. You can buy a PATH single-ride ticket, or pay with a SmartLink card or a MetroCard.

NJ Transit fare from Newark Penn Station to the airport is $11.

The fare for the AirTrain is normally $8, though it is included in your NJ Transit ticket when you're going to and from the airport.

Option 3: Take the PATH train and an NJ Transit bus.

Fare: $4.35 for most riders.

This is an accessible trip.

1. Take the PATH from World Trade Center Station to Newark Penn Station.

World Trade Center Station is in Lower Manhattan. The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, E, R, and W subway lines all have stops nearby.

2. Transfer to the #62 NJ Transit bus at Newark Penn Station.

Fare for the PATH train is $2.75. You can pay using a pay-per-ride MetroCard (except EasyPay) or a PATH SmartLink card. Fare for the 62 bus is $1.60. You can buy a ticket at a vending machine in Newark Penn Station, or pay exact change onboard.

This is your most cost-effective option. It's also a good choice if you’re traveling when NJ Transit trains aren’t running overnight.
